Meet Girma

At Metrie, we are proud of our team members who work hard and grow with us. Today, we want to introduce you to Girma, Production Lead Operator with our Calgary Manufacturing team, who has been with us for over 15 years. He shares his story of how he found his second home at Metrie.

Girma came to Canada from Ethiopia in 2008, looking for a new opportunity. He joined Metrie thanks to a friend who invited him to work with us. He had no experience in our manufacturing activities, but he was eager to learn and work hard. He was impressed by the fast-paced environment at Metrie. He saw everyone working diligently, running two production lines with only 15 people. He joined them as a material handler, packaging and stacking raw material. He quickly learned the ropes and moved to a prime line operator, which was an exciting experience for him.

He recalls the first time he was instructed on how to build a frame. He said, “Anything that you can show me I can do it.” And he did it. He proved himself to be a reliable and responsible worker, always trying to improve things in his job.

Girma found good friends and mentors at Metrie who trained and guided him throughout his journey. After four years, his supervisors noticed his potential and offered him the position of production lead operator, which he embraced from the first moment. He is very proud to be part of the enormous and substantial growth of Metrie. He also appreciates the change in the management department in the last few years. He says, “They support you if you need help or if you have questions, and they make you feel valued and appreciated.” He enjoys the events that Metrie organizes for its employees, such as employee engagement, recognition, and more.

He says, “Metrie is not just a workplace for me, it is my second home.” He is grateful for the opportunity to work at Metrie, and he hopes to continue growing and learning with us.
